A “civilized internet” means less cyberbullying and more dissemination of party theories and socialist values, according to an article published in the Study Times, a Chinese Communist Party publication. Talking point: The announcement comes amid Beijing’s wide-ranging crackdowns on the technology industry, its private sector, as well as on influencer and celebrity culture. Last month, for example, the country’s biggest social media platforms, WeChat and Weibo, deleted thousands of independent financial-news accounts following new regulatory changes set out by the country’s internet watchdog. While reining in the country’s internet giants, China is also seeking to use the companies’ capital to help invest in reducing reliance on U.S. and European technology. Meanwhile, the U.S. banned China Telecom from operating in the country, citing national security concerns.
