A deal to grow Canada’s uranium shipments to India is set to be among the co-operation agreements announced as Prime Minister Mark Carney visits Mumbai and New Delhi this week, according to Dinesh Patnaik, India’s high commissioner in Ottawa. (Bloomberg)
Talking point: Canada’s Energy Minister Tim Hodgson confirmed last month that both countries were “working on the finer details” of the export deal, which would reportedly have Saskatoon-based Cameco sell about US$2.8 billion worth of uranium to India over 10 years. “We supply uranium for peaceful purposes to countries all over the world,” Hodgson said at India Energy Week in Goa, where he also talked up India’s interest in Canada’s crude oil and liquefied natural gas to help meet rising demand for energy. Cameco, which began shipping uranium to India in 2015, had no comment. Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe will join Carney on the trip.
