Amazon processed 27 information requests—which could include subpoenas, search warrants and court orders—in Canada last year, including one for Amazon Web Services, a company spokesperson told The Logic. Amazon did not disclose any further details about the requests. (The Logic)
Talking point: The spokesperson was unable to say how that compared to the previous year “because the 2019 report … did not break out data for individual countries outside the U.S.” The company said it processed 27,664 information requests total and a further 523 by Amazon Web Services between July and December 2020, according to its biannual report. The company said that it “does not disclose customer information in response to government demands unless required to do so to comply with a legally valid and binding order.” The bulk of the requests, or 42.4 per cent, came from Germany, followed by 18.8 per cent from Spain. At AWS, 74.6 per cent of processed requests came from the United States.
