Thomas Recaldo, a Canadian chef living in Antigua, has died and six people of British and American nationalities are missing after a yacht called the Bayesian sank off the coast of Sicily early Monday morning during bad weather. Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter are among those not accounted for. (CBC, Reuters, BBC)
Talking point: Sometimes described as “Britain’s Bill Gates,” a U.S. court recently cleared Lynch of 15 counts of fraud related to Hewlett-Packard’s US$11.1-billion purchase of his company, Autonomy, in 2011. Lynch’s wife Angela Bacares owns the Bayesian and Lynch had organized the trip for his work contacts, Reuters reported. Bacares and a one-year-old girl are among the 15 people who escaped before the boat sank. Global Affairs Canada told the BBC the agency is “aware of reports that a Canadian citizen has died.” Officials have not released the names of the missing.
