Some 12.2 per cent of firms had employed AI to produce goods or deliver services in the year leading up to the second quarter of 2025, according to a Statistics Canada study published Monday. That’s up from 6.1 per cent in the same period in 2024. (The Logic)
Talking point: Canadian businesses are notoriously slow to adopt new digital tools. Policymakers and researchers have warned that the country must avoid a repeat performance with AI if the technology is to help address flagging productivity growth. The Statistics Canada study suggests any gains so far are limited, and unequally distributed. Firms in the knowledge economy were more likely to be using AI, with about a third of businesses in the information and culture, professional and scientific services and finance and insurance industries employing the technology. Across sectors, companies were most often using AI to analyze text and data while a quarter employed AI agents or chatbots.
