The two countries aim to finish talks on two free trade agreements by the end of 2026, Prime Minister Mark Carney said Thursday, as Philippines President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. visited Vancouver. One is a bilateral deal between the two countries and the other is between Canada and the larger Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) bloc, which the Philippines currently chairs. Talking point: Canada-Philippines trade is relatively small ($3.4 billion in goods in 2025) but has been growing slowly for years. (The first commercial shipment of Philippine mangoes, regarded as the sweetest in the world, arrived in Canada last month.) Before he left for Vancouver, Marcos publicly praised Canada’s support for the Philippines in its confrontations with China over maritime sovereignty rights in the South China Sea. Canada is also helping detect “dark vessels”—ships with their identifying transponders turned off—off the Philippine coast.
