Talking point: As majority owner of nuclear company Westinghouse Electric Co., Brookfield stands to benefit from global interest in nuclear power as an alternative to fossil fuels to meet growing electricity demand (as does its co-owner, Saskatchewan’s Cameco). The multibillion-dollar upfront costs of a rapid nuclear expansion will take new financial instruments for nuclear plants to compete with other low-emissions power sources, said Prime Minister Robert Golob of Slovenia in announcing the financial institutions’ new support. His country plans to expand its own nuclear energy capacity more than threefold by the 2030s.
