Talking point: Due to the protest, there’s been no single viral dance using the song, as of Thursday afternoon. The drought is intended to show how much other influencers rely on the choreography of Black creators. Charli D’Amelio, one of TikTok’s biggest stars, was dubbed the CEO of the Renegade, a viral dance that she helped popularize but that Jalaiah Harmon created. Without credit, Harmon didn’t receive the opportunities that can come with viral fame. Black influencers, in general, face a social media pay gap. TikTok itself has been accused of prioritizing white creators’ content with its algorithm. The company apologized to its Black community last year, and provided an update on its efforts to improve two days ago. Still, the sentiment that “it’s way harder to go up on TikTok if you are not white” remains true for many, one creator told NBC News.
