Talking point: The lawsuit shows how the Chinese-Canadian founder is taking steps to defend his and Binance’s reputation as regulatory scrutiny of one of the world’s largest crypto exchanges intensifies. In Canada, his company recently exited Ontario after a crackdown by regulators into unregistered exchanges operating in the province. This isn’t Zhao’s first lawsuit against a media outlet. In 2020, Binance sued Forbes Global Media over an article that described the company’s plan to circumvent U.S. regulations; it voluntarily withdrew the lawsuit the following year. Modern Media declined the South China Morning Post’s request for comment.
