The telecom said Bell Ventures will invest in early-stage and growth companies that are developing technology solutions that could help differentiate its 5G and fibre networks. (The Logic)
Talking point: Curtis Millen, who is also senior vice-president of corporate strategy and treasurer of BCE, leads Bell Ventures. Its portfolio includes investments made well before Tuesday’s announcement, such as Toronto entertainment company OverActive Media in which BCE acquired a minority interest in June 2019. Other investments include Toronto-based robot delivery company Tiny Mile and San Francisco-based multi-angle video viewing provider 4DReplay. It joins other corporations in launching a dedicated venture-capital arm, including Telus with Telus Ventures and Loblaw with its affiliated Wittington Ventures. The move comes as venture-capital activity in Canada has continued to drop.
