A 140-kilometre undersea cable that crosses the Cabot Strait was severed twice, most recently on Dec. 24, 2024, prompting Bell to consider its maritime surveillance options and the RCMP to launch an investigation. (CBC, The Canadian Press)
Talking point: Two cables in the Baltic Sea were cut within hours of each other last year in what Finland alleges was sabotage; separately, so was a power cable between Finland and Estonia. In Canadian waters, Bell executive David Joice said the cuts to the telco’s steel-sheathed line appear deliberate, but might have been done to free ships that snagged the cable with their anchors or fishing gear—not necessarily maliciously. Bell is burying the cable under the sea bottom to try to protect it.
