Talking point: TES said it would build its own one-gigawatt wind and solar farm to power the majority of the project, and will develop hydrogen “exclusively dedicated to Quebec end users.” One-third of the hydrogen will be used in long-haul transportation, the company said, and the rest will be used to produce renewable natural gas for the province’s existing systems. TES will fund 60 per cent of the project, while France Chretien-Desmarais of the billionaire Desmarais family will provide the remaining funding. The project will be one of the largest green hydrogen facilities built in Canada to date, a major investment that comes as the Canadian, U.S. and other governments offer large-scale subsidies for clean energy projects. TES chief executive Marco Alverà told the Financial Times that Ottawa’s subsidies are “really important to get the ball rolling” on major projects.
