Talking point: As more EVs hit the road, an industry is cropping up to deal with their batteries. Moment aims to cut diesel use in off-grid areas with help from automakers. The company said it has a facility in Port Coquitlam, B.C., and will use the funding to hire more staff and deploy more energy-storage systems. It’s not the only Canadian company bringing new life to old batteries. Li-Cycle, which recycles batteries and scrap, has had some traction with major investors. Meanwhile in Sweden, OMERS-backed battery firm Northvolt said it has produced a battery cell with 100 per cent recycled nickel, manganese and cobalt. Steve Elder, instructor and program designer of an EV diploma at the British Columbia Institute of Technology, told The Logic last month that he’s seen increasing demand for old batteries, which he bids on for use in his courses. “Even though they’re no good for an electric car, they’re certainly good to run a household,” he said.
