Talking point: In raising the possibility of blocking news in Australia, Meta is proposing the same hardline stance it took in Canada, where it blocked news following the passage of the Online News Act into law. In 2021, at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Meta drew fury in Australia after it enacted a five-day suspension of news content there, which saw public health sites removed as well. Meanwhile, New Zealand is also pressing ahead with a bill that would compel Big Tech companies to pay for news content published on their platforms in that country.
