Talking point: Such a decline would mark a sizable setback for Alberta, which was projected to lead Canada in economic growth over the coming years. The province’s heavy reliance on its fossil fuels sector, particularly in Calgary, makes it among the regions most exposed to Trump’s tariff threats, despite the U.S. administration thus far leaving energy out of its crosshairs. Alberta’s looming economic troubles come at a sensitive time for the province, and could sap some of its momentum as it looks to draw workers and capital away from other regions in a bid to diversify. “Just as the Alberta economy was hitting its stride, a new challenge has emerged—a geopolitical one,” ATB analysts said.
