Talking point: The move comes as Facebook faces antitrust investigations in the U.S. and Europe, and as prominent politicians call for it to be broken up. Instagram and WhatsApp have largely avoided the barrage of negative sentiment that has afflicted their parent company; an October study found that just 29 per cent of Americans know Facebook owns the two firms. Tying the brands more closely together in the public mind could help Facebook ride the coattails of its subsidiaries to a more positive public association. The firm also considered changing its corporate name, like Google did when it created the holding company Alphabet, but ultimately decided against it.
