Talking point: On Thursday, Reuters reported that searching for the word “suicide” on Amazon’s U.S. platform showed “suicide kits” and nooses; its India website showed sleeping pills, pesticides and a book called How To Commit Suicide. Amazon told Reuters on Thursday it had taken down the items after being alerted of them, though on Friday, Gizmodo reported that the autofill for “noose” still included suicide-related options (in response, Amazon said the autofill will be removed). On Amazon’s Canadian marketplace, searching for the term “noose” showed ropes and one result for bleach. The move comes as Big Tech is being increasingly scrutinized around their content moderation; Google, Facebook and Twitter have already been showing helpline numbers for users searching suicide-related terms. As Amazon continues to expand, so too do its issues with its third-party products: a recent Wall Street Journal investigation found over 4,000 items declared unsafe by agencies, mislabelled or even banned by regulators.
