Talking point: The drivers and BTS had agreed to better pay and more support for those working in very hot conditions. Amazon spokesperson Eileen Hards said the drivers do not work for Amazon, and that independent operator BTS “had been notified of its termination for poor performance well before” the unionization announcement. The Teamsters have been working to unionize Amazon employees in Canada too, but their efforts have yet to bear fruit. As my colleague Catherine reported, Amazon has spent years fighting a unionization push from some Ontario drivers.
