Amazon Web Services said it will open a hub in Calgary starting as soon as late 2023. It already operates another one in Montreal. (The Logic)

Talking point: Calgary had lobbied to be the location of Amazon’s second headquarters in a heated race among North American cities in 2017, but failed to make the shortlist. Amazon split the so-called HQ2 between New York City and Northern Virginia, later leaving New York after backlash. The company says it will invest up to $21 billion by 2037 in the Calgary and Montreal regions, estimating it will add $39 billion to the national GDP by that time. The company said the Calgary expansion will support 963 full-time equivalent jobs in the Canadian economy, not just at AWS. While Alberta Premier Jason Kenney lauded the announcement, the Council of Canadian Innovators expressed concerns about how the tech giant’s expansion could exacerbate homegrown companies’ issues with hiring skilled talent. AWS said in a statement to The Logic it’s addressing the Canadian tech talent shortage, having helped train over 100,000 people since 2013. It also recently announced a partnership with Plato Testing.
