Talking point: His comments come after the Alberta government commissioned a study on whether the province should break from the federal pension plan and establish its own autonomous fund. Alberta Premier Danielle Smith called for the study as part of a multi-pronged effort to challenge Ottawa’s constitutional authority and assume more control over the province’s finances. The study estimated that Alberta was entitled to $334-billion in assets under the CPP—a claim about which Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said he was “deeply concerned.” Poilievre claimed the pension dispute would not exist if he were prime minister because he would remove carbon taxes and “unconstitutional anti-energy laws.”
