Talking point: This farm represents a significant increase in both the amount of power Greengate is able to generate and the total amount of solar power available in Canada. Greengate currently has a little under 600 megawatts (MW) of wind energy projects; this project is for 400 MW. In 2010, across all of Canada, only 123 MW of solar power was generated. By 2015 the amount of installed capacity hit 2,135 MW. Greengate is forging ahead with its plans, despite an announcement from Alberta’s environment minister two weeks ago that the province’s rebate program for solar panels won’t be renewed. That rebate had made Alberta one of the most cost-effective provinces to build solar, according to an analysis by the Canada Energy Regulator.
