Talking point: Sim has described himself as “orange-pilled,” or fully convinced of Bitcoin’s superiority to government-issued currencies. Many Bitcoiners see governments adding bitcoin to their reserves as a step towards the digital asset replacing the U.S. dollar as the global reserve currency, which they argue would increase global prosperity by eliminating inflation. Canada’s Samson Mow has built a company around helping nation states adopt bitcoin, including El Salvador, which has been adding the digital asset to its balance sheet since 2021. But El Salvador highlights the risks of this strategy: Its bitcoin holdings are currently profitable but cratered in value a year after it started buying it, stalling negotiations with the International Monetary Fund for a loan.
