Talking point: Venture capital deals in China soared over the past five years, nearly matching the level of investment in the U.S. There are some indications this drop-off could be temporary. It comes amid volatile ongoing negotiations between the U.S. and China, which could, in theory, end at any time. And, some major investments could be around the corner. For example, e-commerce startup Xiaohongshu is in talks to raise US$500 million from SoftBank. That said, many Chinese VCs are preparing for a more long-term slowdown. The U.S. is considering blacklisting a number of additional Chinese startups in addition to Huawei. In addition, the weak performances of food-delivery service Meituan-Dianping and electronics company Xiaomi since the two went public, as well as the implosion of bike-sharing firm Ofo, have given weight to concerns among some VCs that valuations for startups are too high.
