Amazon is reportedly reconsidering its New York location due to opposition from local politicians. The company hasn’t leased or purchased office space in the area. In Virginia, the second location of its planned expansion, politicians passed a US$750-million subsidies package in early January. For its part, New York offered nearly US$2 billion in incentives. Talking point: After shortlisting 20 cities—including Toronto, the sole Canadian city—Amazon ultimately decided to split its headquarters between two cities, enjoying significant tax breaks between them. Toronto, for its part, did not include tax incentives. Concerns from politicians in both Virginia and New York include increased housing costs and taking away money that could go toward infrastructure. The company is also facing pushback in Los Angeles for allegedly dipping into delivery drivers’ tips. Amazon has significant sway over the communities it inhabits; in June 2018, it played a significant role in killing a tax in Seattle meant to help homeless people, after halting construction on its office in protest.
