Talking point: Google’s payment is contingent on being exempt from the Online News Act; the company has argued that the act’s binding arbitration clause would encourage certain outlets to “hold out” rather than negotiate in good faith. Heritage Minister Pascale St-Onge said in a statement Friday that “tech giants will be contributing their fair share—nothing more.” The CJC represents 12 independent outlets focused on local, minority, Indigenous and French-language communities.
