Talking point: The awards have been a long time coming. The Liberal government first proposed the Strategic Science Fund (SSF) in the March 2019 federal budget, to replace a collection of one-off financing agreements with third-party research organizations. It opened to applications in August 2021, and has been winnowing the field and negotiating deals ever since. Sunday’s awards extend a recent run of federal science moves that included topping up the granting councils that support researchers in April’s budget.
