The artificial intelligence company said it selected Vancouver for its third office, after London and Silicon Valley, because the local pool of tech talent is growing at a rate faster than it is in San Francisco. It also cited proximity to universities, startups and other global tech companies. (The Logic)
Talking point: Company filings, which were previously reported by Bloomberg, show that its investors include Canadian OpenAI co-founder Ilya Sutskever, as well as Microsoft, Sobeys-affiliated online grocery-delivery service Ocado and AI godfather Yann Lecun. (Victoria-based Tiny’s fund, which is also an investor in The Logic, is listed in the filings as well.) The Vancouver office’s first hire is Simon Fraser University computer vision and machine learning professor Yasutaka Furukawa. With companies like Waymo, Cruise and Tesla facing heat for accidents involving self-driving cars or advanced driver assistance, Wayve is trying to differentiate itself with a system that better explains its actions to vehicle owners.
