Talking point: Sweden’s Embracer Group snapped up Eidos-Montréal and Square Enix Montreal as part of its $300-million acquisition spree of numerous firms in 2022. Embracer, which owns the rights to the Tomb Raider and Lord of the Rings franchises, began cutting studios and employees just over a year later. There have been a number of layoffs in the video game industry lately, including at Edmonton’s BioWare in August.
