The Monday meeting came as Heritage Minister Pascale St-Onge said Meta may still be subject to government regulation because Canadian news was still “widely available” on Meta-owned Instagram, even though the company began blocking Canadian news on its platforms in August. (The Globe and Mail)
Talking point: Despite the meeting, Meta’s position hasn’t changed on the proposed law, which comes into effect Dec. 19. “We have long been clear that the only way we can reasonably comply with the Online News Act is by ending news availability for people in Canada,” Meta spokesperson Lisa Laventure wrote in an email to The Logic. In November, the federal government and Google reached a deal on the Online News Act, in which the company will contribute $100 million in annual financial support, indexed to inflation, to link to Canadian news organizations’ content.
