AT&T customers will soon see 5G in the corner of their smartphones, but that’s not because their phones are connected to a 5G network. The carrier is rolling out the display of a “5G E” logo on newer phones connected to LTE in markets where the company has deployed speed boosting technologies, which are still effectively 4G. The “E,” which will be smaller than the rest of the logo, refers to the word “evolution,” the company’s effort at indicating that the networks aren’t yet 5G but are still faster than traditional LTE.
