Talking point: The platform will stop accepting customer orders as of June 14, according to its website. Loblaw launched the service in November 2019 in a move that was regarded as a bid to compete with Amazon. Other Canadian retailers have launched similar strategies in recent years, including Walmart Canada, Hudson’s Bay and Indigo’s Thoughtfull pilot. Loblaw spokesperson Catherine Thomas told The Globe that the retailer is “focusing on our core grocery and pharmacy online shopping experiences.” Hudson’s Bay temporarily suspended its own marketplace and is also considering the strategy’s future as it conducts an audit.
