Defence Construction Canada posted a heads-up to the construction industry last week saying it expects to seek bids in winter 2027 to design and build the facility, at an approximate cost of $1.5 billion to $1.85 billion. It wants the data centre to meet “mid to long-term objectives related to operations, security and technology modernization,” the posting says. It was first reported by CTV News Ottawa. (The Logic)
Talking point: Sixty megawatts is relatively small by hyperscalers’ standards—Meta broke ground on a 1,000-megawatt data centre in Alberta this year. Nevertheless, Hydro Ottawa, the city’s power utility, has warned it’s dealing with requests for 1,075 megawatts worth of hookups from large consumers, most of them data centres; recent peak demand in the city has been under 1,700 megawatts. The utility has had trouble getting key equipment, like transformers, to follow through. Coincidentally, Hitachi Energy announced plans Friday for a $479-million plant making transformer components in London Ont., with backing from the federal and Ontario governments.
