The province and local school board filed a lawsuit against the ChatGPT parent company and CEO Sam Altman, alleging the San Francisco-based company designed a defective product that aided the February school shooting, when Jesse Van Rootselaar killed eight people and herself. It also claimed OpenAI was negligent in handling red flags in Van Rootselaar’s chat history, failing to alert authorities despite warnings from its system and employees. (The Logic)

Talking point: B.C. Attorney General Niki Sharma said the court case, filed in northern California district court, “raises serious questions about the responsibilities of technology companies.” It’s the latest of several lawsuits against the company and Altman. The Crown wants OpenAI to reimburse it for physical destruction and victim services. It said in the court filing that Tumbler Ridge’s secondary school campus was unusable and local medical providers delivered over 900 counselling sessions in the weeks after the shooting. The province alleges OpenAI has not done enough to update its safety features since the shooting, and asked that ChatGPT add more safeguards and warning labels. After the lawsuit was filed, OpenAI spokesperson Drew Pusateri told The Wall Street Journal that the company is continuing to work with government and law enforcement officials on safety.
