Enhance Energy’s Origins CCS Hub will capture up to 1.5 million tonnes of carbon dioxide annually and is expected to be the largest such project in Canada when it begins operations in January 2027. The government-backed hub near Clive, Alta., will be Enhance’s second CCS project, and will offer industrial customers a much larger option for permanent CO2 storage in a saline aquifer. (The Logic)
Talking point: Natural Resources Minister Tim Hodgson hinted Wednesday that even larger carbon capture projects are on the horizon. Origins could eventually be dwarfed by a carbon capture megaproject known as the Pathways Project, proposed by Canada’s oilsands majors. Hodgson defended the economics and benefits of CCS projects, arguing that changes to Alberta’s carbon market under the recent federal-provincial memorandum of understanding have improved the business case. “We now have a basis for a high-functioning carbon market in Alberta,” he said. “A basis so that projects like this make economic sense.”
