Battery Ventures led the Series A round, which included existing investors Y Combinator and San Francisco-based Wayfinder Ventures. Insurer Intact joined the round via its private capital arm, as did truck dealer Penske. Terminal unifies data from trucks so it can be used more easily by insurers and other service companies, and said it will use the money to meet more demand from partner companies. (The Logic)
Talking point: Terminal is betting that dashcam footage, GPS co-ordinates, and dashboard warning lights are valuable for more than just truck owners and drivers. It wants to make it easier for others to access such data, such as financial companies seeking to stop fuel-card fraud or insurers that want to adjust premiums. The company’s technology helps connect 325 data sources. Intact Private Capital managing director Justin Smith-Lorenzetti said the technology is helpful for insurers that were using “fragmented” data. The 17-person team, all based in Toronto, aims to double its headcount this year, according to CEO Raghav Midha.
