The game publisher is shutting down the studio amid a wider round of cuts across its global operations. The studio employed roughly 65 people, according to MobileSyrup. The studio had worked on the technology powering many of Ubisoft’s titles, and provided development support on games like Assassin’s Creed Valhalla and Rainbow Six Mobile. Ubisoft is also closing its Belgrade development studio and restructuring one of its Barcelona studios, putting a total of 380 jobs at risk. Ubisoft PR manager Caroline Stelmach told The Logic no other Canadian studios were affected by the layoffs. (The Game Business, MobileSyrup)
Talking point: Ubisoft has been stumbling for over three years at this point, going so far as to spin off its biggest franchises into a joint venture with Tencent for a €1.16-billion cash injection last November. The Winnipeg closure is the latest in a string of hits to its Canadian operations this year, which included the January shuttering of Ubisoft Halifax and layoffs at Ubisoft Toronto in February. Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot in May said the current fiscal year was “expected to represent a low point in our free cash flow trajectory” before the company’s fortunes improve, adding “this two-year transformation comes with difficult decisions and a disappointing short-term financial performance.”
