The province will not invest further in the France-based cargo dirigible company, in large part because profits from further investment would benefit entities outside of Quebec, Economic Minister Bernard Drainville said. (La Presse)
Talking point: Since 2019, Quebec has invested more than $75 million in Flying Whales, which says its giant, helium-filled blimp can move 60 tonnes of cargo, giving access to remote locations without road access. The company has established an engineering hub in the province, and planned to build a North American plant and operations base near the Sherbrooke airport. Yet it has yet to produce an airship prototype, and some have doubts it will ever achieve liftoff. Flying Whales is close to raising a fresh round of investment that could top €105 million, according to French business publication La Tribune, and hopes to raise another €55 million before the end of the year. The company did not comment to La Presse.
