High Commissioner Dinesh Patnaik said the probe into the 2023 shooting death of Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in B.C. has been “twisted around,” and that Sikh separatist groups have paid Canadian intelligence officers to share false claims. (The Globe and Mail)
Talking point: ““There are a whole lot of allegations within India that the Canadian security establishment is compromised,” Patnaik said in an interview published Tuesday. He also denied India’s involvement in foreign interference. Simon Lafortune, a spokesperson for Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree, said: “Any suggestion that CSIS is ‘compromised’ is false.” Patnaik said in a statement posted to social media later Tuesday that the newspaper report of his remarks “does not reflect our current assessment of the integrity of institutions.” A delegation from India is on a trade mission to Canada this week as both countries are negotiating a deal aimed at doubling bilateral trade to $70 billion by 2030. Canada’s Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu said Monday he will lead a business delegation to India this year.
