The Ottawa-based commerce company said merchants around the world that use its platform sold US$3.36 billion from the start of Black Friday in New Zealand until the day of shopping frenzy ended in California, marking its highest total to date. (The Logic)
Talking point: Shopify said this year its merchants surpassed US$5.1 billion in sales—what they sold from Black Friday through Cyber Monday in 2020—before Sunday night. Global merchants’ point-of-sale (or in-store) sales grew 26 per cent for that time frame over last year’s Black Friday weekend, and in Canada they rose 22 per cent, the company said. In September, Shopify announced a new POS device, saying “offline retail is all the way back.” Its merchants’ global average cart price was up slightly this year to US$100.80 from US$99.50, and in Canada to $156.92 from $148.41. The numbers are good news for Shopify, which takes a cut from its merchants’ orders.
