MDA Space said it will continue working on the Canadarm3, for which it has a billion-dollar contract with the Canadian Space Agency (CSA), even though the United States has “paused” the space station for which the robot arm is being built. The technology might have other buyers, MDA said. (The Logic)
Talking point: The Canadarm3 is Canada’s major contribution to the U.S.-led Lunar Gateway, which was meant to be a staging area for future lunar landings and bases and eventually missions to Mars. The two countries signed a co-operation agreement in 2020, during President Donald Trump’s last administration, and the CSA’s recently released plan for the coming year emphasizes Lunar Gateway work. To save money, that plan also scrapped a Canadian mission to land a rover on the moon, which was announced in 2022 with a $43-million contract award to Canadensys. The company said American and European rover programs might be interested in the technology it has developed.
