Talking point: In 2024, following a national security review, Ottawa ordered TikTok to “wind up” its Canadian business operations. The order, which was later quashed in court, didn’t ban the app in Canada but would have required TikTok to close its Canadian offices. Canada was among several countries to express concerns that TikTok’s parent company, Beijing-based ByteDance, could provide sensitive personal information to China’s government. The industry minister’s office didn’t immediately respond to questions about Canada’s new assessment of TikTok. In a press release, Industry Minister Mélanie Joly said Canada is now aligned with the EU’s similar approach to the app. Meanwhile, the TikTok app is still banned on government devices.
