U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer announced Thursday that he and Marcelo Ebrard, Mexico’s secretary of the economy, have asked negotiators to meet the week of March 16 as part of the review of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). (The Logic)
Talking point: Canada is not invited, but this does not mean it is being cut out. The USMCA review that is set to begin by July 1 will include all three countries, but Monday’s annual report on President Donald Trump’s trade policy agenda said the review would “include bilateral engagement with each country, as well as trilateral engagement where appropriate, to address challenges in our relationships.” Canada-U.S. Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc is going to Washington, D.C., on Friday, where he will meet Greer. In Australia this week, Prime Minister Mark Carney said the USMCA “effectively has been broken in the short-term by U.S. actions” and the review will be a way to rebuild trust.
