Global Times, an English-language arm of the People’s Daily, reported that China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian vowed to “firmly safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese enterprises” after the Canadian government ordered three Chinese firms to divest from Canadian lithium miners. (The Logic)
Talking point: Ultra Lithium, one of the Canadian firms affected by the order, said it mutually agreed with its Chinese backer Zangge Mining to terminate their deal to develop a lithium brine in Argentina. Ultra, which plans to continue its work in Argentina, said it is assessing its legal options and believes the order has been “detrimental” to the company’s Canadian investors. It also urged Canada to “find alternative sources of capital” for the clean energy-supply chain. Lithium Chile, another firm impacted by the order, said its Chinese backer Chengze Lithium owns more than 19 per cent of the company’s outstanding shares and is reviewing legal options.
