Germany might buy planes from Bombardier and Canadian software for its whole navy, and help construct Canadian shipyards to build and maintain subs if Canada buys a multibillion-dollar new fleet from Germany’s TKMS, Boris Pistorius promised during a visit to Ottawa. He and his Norwegian counterpart Tore O. Sandvik said they want Canada to join their sub-making coalition and reject a competing offer from South Korea’s Hanwha Ocean. (The Logic)

Talking point: Norway is the junior member of the pair but is getting a submarine shipyard out of its purchase and Sandvik said it would share the blueprints with Canada. Pistorius and Sandvik argued that it’s better strategy for Canada to get subs from NATO allies for military reasons, too, including interoperability, the prospect of joint crews and Norway’s experience in the Arctic. Prime Minister Mark Carney is expected to visit Hanwha—which makes submarines partly thanks to earlier technology transfers from Germany, and has its own Canadian connections—on an upcoming visit to South Korea.
