Talking point: About 13 per cent of Magna’s sales came from China last year, making it the third most valuable market behind the U.S. and Austria. The company, headquartered about 50 kilometres north of Toronto, said in a press release it could help Chinese automakers expand into Europe. It’s among the Canadian companies brokering deals in China as tariffs—a key irritant between the two countries—come up for debate. The federal government is “looking at” whether to ease its 100 per cent tariffs on Chinese EV imports if China softens its retaliatory tariffs on canola, Agriculture Minister Heath MacDonald said last week. Meanwhile, groups like the Canadian Vehicle Manufacturers’ Association favour keeping tariffs on Chinese EVs.
