Talking point: This is the company’s first VFX expansion outside New Zealand. CEO Prem Akkaraju called Vancouver an “established market for VFX, animation and games talent” as the company looks to grow and tap into the global talent pool. Vancouver’s gaming companies are already aggressively competing for talent, with established titans, such as Electronic Arts Canada, and smaller players making up more than 170 development studios in the city. Weta FX’s Vancouver location will initially hire 75 artists. The announcement comes after the company sold its Weta Digital unit to the 3D-platform company Unity for about US$1.6 billion in a deal that closed Dec. 1, 2021.
