Talking point: Transport Minister Omar Alghabra announced Wednesday the federal government was seeking expressions of corporate interest in “co-developing” Canada’s plan for faster, more frequent train service, but the government held back the details. “Existing Via services within the corridor will be transitioned to the private partner” alongside the new routes once a final deal is done, the document says, in an arrangement to last 30 to 50 years. The government wants the private sector to take on “revenue risk, control of operations and maintenance responsibilities for the entire corridor,” including setting schedules and prices.
