Talking point: The product launch comes amid a new wave of lockdown restrictions across Canada, prompting increased demand for delivery services like Uber Eats and DoorDash. Square said its service won’t take a commission, unlike other platforms that can charge up to 30 per cent in fees. The service has been live in the U.S. since 2020. It’s the latest of several existing products that Square has introduced in Canada in recent months, as more fintech companies bundle services to draw customers. Politicians have taken notice of tech platforms’ delivery fees: also on Wednesday, the NDP released a statement criticizing grocery-delivery services like Instacart, saying they overcharge customers.
