Talking point: Magna’s new CEO Swamy Kotagiri is playing the long game on an acquisition that will dilute earnings for at least two years, according to a conference call on Friday. The company has long had a partnership with Veoneer rival Mobileye, and also backs self-driving-car company Waymo. Kotagiri said on the call that although higher-level self-driving technologies are further out, this deal will push Magna toward the top of the camera and radar-technology markets. Veoneer’s big draw was its talent, which includes 1,700 software engineers, he said. A note from CIBC Equity Research’s Kevin Chiang and Krista Friesen calls it a positive step in Magna’s strategy to be a leader of emerging technologies, and that Magna looks to be a consolidator going forward, based on its balance sheet.
