Anita Balakrishnan and Jon Victor join The Logic’s newsroom as reporters. Read more in this note to staff from managing editor, Jordan Timm:

I’m very excited to announce two more new additions to our newsroom.

Anita Balakrishnan is joining The Logic as a reporter.

Anita was most recently a business reporter and editor at The Canadian Press, where she reported on banks, real estate and autos. Her recent coverage includes play-by-play coverage of the retail trading frenzy around BlackBerry and GameStop, last year’s auto labour  negotiations and the ongoing battle around data in the real estate sector.

She will be launching a new beat for us covering electric and autonomous vehicles. She’ll take a comprehensive approach to the sector, covering everything from the factory floor to IP and the supply chain.

Prior to The Canadian Press, Anita was a reporter and editor for the Thomson Reuters’ Law Times newsletter, where she led its transition from a weekly print edition to an online daily. She dove deep to publish scoops on technical topics like title insurance, wills and the future of self-regulation, alongside journalism on racism and sexism in the legal profession.

Anita has a master’s degree in business and economic reporting from New York University and an undergraduate double major in environmental biology and economics from the University of Denver. Before joining Thomson Reuters, Anita was a tech and business reporter at CNBC.com, and interned at USA Today Money. She will be based in Toronto, and her first day with us will be May 3.

Jon Victor is joining The Logic as a reporter.

He, too, joins us most recently from The Canadian Press, where he was a business reporter, primarily covering Canada’s transportation sector. During his time with the national newswire, he has written about airlines’ efforts to navigate the challenges of the pandemic, the federal government’s restrictions on international travel and the impact of COVID-19 on tourism businesses in Canada, among other issues.

Jon will become The Logic’s first dedicated fintech reporter; he’ll cover the emergence of new players in the space, the efforts Canada’s financial institutions are making to innovate, and the shaping of the rules that govern the country’s financial sector. He’ll also take over coverage of key payments-technology companies.

Jon previously worked as a reporter for The Information, where he anchored a weekly newsletter on cryptocurrency and published in-depth stories about startups like Coinbase and ConsenSys. He has a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from Yale University. Jon joins us on April 19, and will be based in Montreal.

The addition of Anita and Jon will make The Logic’s newsroom bigger than it’s ever been, and the launch of these new beats will help us better focus our existing coverage. We will be more ambitious, aim for greater impact and give our subscribers more of the top-quality journalism they expect from us.
